Essential Voices: Ralph Vaughan Williams - May 13, 2018 3pm
Ralph Vaughan Williams (1872-1958) expanded English concert music beyond classical German and Austrian influences, incorporating elements from folk song and medieval traditions to craft a more authentic English style. This program includes early and later masterworks: Toward the Unknown Region (1907) sets a Walt Whitman poem (Darest thou now O Soul from Leaves of Grass) for chorus and orchestra, and helped establish Vaughan Williams as a new and important voice. The magnificent Dona Nobis Pacem (1936), an impassioned anti-wacantata based on Whitman poems and sacred texts, reflects Vaughan Williams’ service in World War I and growing European tensions before World War II. Five Variants on Dives and Lazarus” (1939) evokes his love of English folk music, in this case set for string orchestra and harp. Please consider joining the Back Bay Chorale, Orchestra and soloists on this Mother's Day.
