Handel & Vivaldi: Joyous and Celebratory Works
Four Coronation Anthems & Gloria in D
On November 23rd the Harvard Radcliffe Chorus will perform two stirring pieces by George Frideric Handel and Antonio Vivaldi at 8 pm in Sanders Theatre. Join us, and professional soloists and musicians, as we perform Four Coronation Anthems & Gloria in G.
Handel’s Coronation Anthems have withstood the test of time. Popular during Handel’s lifetime, they are performed frequently and have been a feature of every British Coronation ceremony since their premiere. Their many large musical gestures will be magnified by the acoustics of Sanders Theatre.
Vivaldi, a priest, music teacher and virtuoso violinist, composed many sacred choral works and hundreds of instrumental concertos. Characteristic of all of Vivaldi’s music, the joyful, sunny nature of the Gloria gave this work an immediate and universal appeal. For two centuries after his death, the Gloria lay silent until the late 1920s, when it was found in a pile of forgotten manuscripts.
We hope you enjoy these joyous, celebratory pieces as much as we do!
